In our latest competition #12 there is a stockyard between the pole pickup and deposit rather than a knocking or spearing ring obstacle. Our demo video for the Novice rider shows the stockyard between the pole pickup and deposit.
The pole is also known as a ‘garrocha’ or ‘varra’ and is between approximately 2.4m to 3.5m. We suggest using the shortest pole at the lower levels (and possibly smaller for small ponies as long as it extends far enough out to avoid poking the eyes when held vertically).
The stockyard is also known as ‘stockpen’ or ‘livestock pen’. The WENZ rules reference it as ‘stockyard’.
Introductory Level
Pole pickup
At walk practice getting prepared early on the approach, reins in one hand for balanced straight line. Pick up pole and find balance point to carry either under your arm or out from body. Most important thing to show is calm confidence in the horse and the riders’ ability to prepare early, ride with one hand and handle pole correctly.
Pole Deposit
On the approach to the barrel swing the butt of the pole forward then gently and accurately place in barrel on the way past. This practice of getting ready early will serve you well in the future when you are trotting and cantering. Judged mostly on your horse staying straight and calm.
Preparatory Level
Same requirements as Introductory level but can be done in walk or trot.
Preliminary Level
Pole PickUP
Approach in canter doing a timely transition to trot and prepare the line with reins in one hand. Picking up pole and staying in trot to approach the livestock pen.
POLE DEPOSIT
In our competition (done in a tight 20x40m arena course), no canter is expected between the stockyard and depositing the pole. Requirements are the same as Introductory but done at trot with a higher degree of reliability, straightness, and timing.
Novice Level
Pole PickUP
Approach in right lead canter, show a well-prepared line and confident pole pick up.
POLE DEPOSIT
To be done in right lead canter but you will not be hugely penalized for left lead. Thoughtful deliberate planned navigation from the Stockyard to depositing the pole will be rewarded. Simple changes through walk encouraged. Counter canter allowed and rewarded if done well.
Elementary Level
Same as Novice for both picking up the pole and depositing, except you will be penalized for left lead instead of right. On the navigation from Stockyard to the pole deposit, counter canter allowed and rewarded if done well.
