Bell Corridor Requirements

Written by head judge, Maree McAteer

Introductory Level

Entering in straight at walk, halting the rider level with the bell, ringing the bell, reins back in 2 hands and departing. We are looking for the horse being calm and confident to halt immobile while ringing bell and preparing to depart.

Preparatory Level

Same requirements as Introductory level but showing greater degree of acceptance of aids to halt with balanced immobility and depart straight.

Preliminary Level

Entering the bell corridor straight at walk or trot, halting immobile to ring bell then backing out paying attention to straightness, diagonalization of steps, rhythmical continuation, poll the highest point of neck, nose vertical or in front followed by a ¼ turn on hindquarters to depart.

Novice Level

Entering the ‘L’ corridor at walk or canter, halt immobile to ring the bell then back out around the corner with the same requirements as Preliminary.

Elementary Level

Same requirements as Novice. Ideally [for competition #12] you approach on right lead canter. Either around the short side of the arena or from the gate in counter canter. The first option coming through the short side corner then immediately entering the bell and turning to the halt might be easier to develop the collected canter to the halt. I look forward to seeing what you choose.

Example at Preparatory Level

Thanks to rider Michelle MacDonnel.

Example at Preliminary Level

Thanks to rider Anne Jennings.
